Colchester Student 1800 | Model Engineer

I have a Student 1500 square-head, circa 1969, and I don t know if Colchester modified the dimensions of the footprint for any later 1800 model. However, from the foundation plan given in the manual for my lathe the overall dimensions are as follows:
a. Total length of machine, including drip-tray overhang is 61 .
b. The diagram suggests an additional 18 clearance is given to the left of the machine to facilitate the removal of the change-wheel guard. This will be required regardless of the machine having a gearbox or not as certain threads and feeds rely on change-wheel configurations as input to the gear-box.
c. From the centre-line of the lathe to the rear motor guard, which protrudes from the rear of the machine, is 20 . ....

Lower back issues | Model Engineer

I went down with what I eventually discovered was ankylosing spondylitis (AS) when I was 18, or therabouts. I m now 78.
Diagnosis was confirmed when I was 38, and I was put on mefenamic acid/ponstan (an NSAID - Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) for pain relief. Ultimately, the drug, although good at pain relief, affected my stomach so I m now on lansoprazole for, I think, acid reduction, and no more NSAID s. Fortunately, after about 40 years of intermittent pain, stiffness & sciatica, the AS burnt itself out and no more pain, just a permanent stoop.
One thing I did discover was that hot baths seem to help, and sleeping on my own in a single bed with sheets & blankets tucked in, ie like a sleeping bag, is also helpful. I can only assume that in both instances any coldness is being dissipated before it gets to my lower back. ....

Lathe gear calculation | Model Engineer

Asked a similar question some time ago but forgotten the answer...doh!
Could some kind soul take 5 minutes and enlighten me on how to calculate lathe gear changes required for selective pitches please?
I can see on machine what gears I need but how exactly does this work out eg. my machine has 8tpi leadscrew, I have 20,30,40,50,55,60,63,70,75 + 80 gears. For a 26tpi thread I would need 70, 65, 30 + 60 gears but how does the maths work here exactly?
My previous thread a gentlemen mentioned the 127/100 rule, what does that mean and what bearing does it have on change gears?

Myford Super 7 with 'Big Bore Conversion'

I have visited the workshop of Roy Milner, nr. Lincoln, when I collected a Myford S7 cross-slide from him that I won on eBay. I am not qualified enough to comment on the technical attributes of his big-bore conversions, but simply by observation of his work and the finished examples of his converted lathes, I have to say the products I observed looked absolutely superb.
In fact, had I not had the Maitresse de Maison in tow, I would have been tempted to buy the long-bed example he was selling at the time on the spot. Only the fear of a severe reprimand prevented me from doing so. ....
