The two brothers are accused of having executed the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia by car bomb, on 16 October 2017. Another accomplice, Vince Muscat ‘il-Koħħu’, has pleaded guilty in return for a reduced 15-year sentence and information that led to the arraignment of alleged bomb-makers Adrian and Robert Agius ‘tal-Maksar’, and associate Jamie Vella.

Degiorgios in double legal challenge against Cabinet's pardon refusal

George and Alfred Degiorgio have mounted a two-fold legal challenge against Cabinet’s decision denying their request for a presidential pardon, effectively turning down information they had about “very serious crimes.”
Although they were “more than willing” to supply such direct information concerning the involvement of a former Minister as well as a sitting Minister in such crimes, the State was not acting like a normal country where the rule of law truly exists, claimed the Degiorgios.
Rather, by turning down their request without even listening to what they had to say, the authorities were holding back “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.” ....

Carmelo Abela can't recall testifying in HSBC 2010 heist proceedings

Carmelo Abela would use equipment that produced access cards for HSBC Bank’s main office in Qormi, according to his own testimony 10 years ago.
Abela had been summoned as a witness by the prosecution in the compilation of evidence against Darren Debono, known as it-Topo, and Vince Muscat, known as il-Koħħu, who were accused of executing a daring heist on the bank in June 2010.
However, Abela now claims that he cannot recall testifying in the proceedings when questioned by Times of Malta. His testimony was delivered behind closed doors on his request in February 2011.
At the time of the failed robbery, Abela worked as a senior insurance and statistics officer within the bank’s Department of Security, Health and Safety. ....

Watch: Minister had access to HSBC heist security equipment

The Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister, Carmelo Abela, was among a select number of HSBC staff who had access to security equipment used to generate key cards suspected to have been used during a daring 2010 bank heist.
A transcript reviewed by
Times of Malta shows Abela was called to testify in 2011 about his access to this equipment, known as a Cotag machine.
During the testimony, which took place behind closed doors upon the MP’s request, Abela confirmed he used the machine when his colleagues were on leave or sick leave.
Self-confessed murderer Vince Muscat detailed how robbers were given colour-coded access cards by an unnamed accomplice that would take them through multiple layers of security all the way to the bank’s control room. ....
