'Drive carefully' warning on A65 following yesterday's flash flooding

MOTORISTS are being warned this morning to be careful when driving along the A65 between Settle and Giggleswick after sudden heavy rain caused flash flooding yesterday (Sunday). PCSO Craig Lyons tweeted this morning: Some of our roads have been seriously effected by flooding, including the A65 at Giggleswick. Please take care whilst driving around Craven this morning #floods #roadsafety. Heavy rain fell for about three hours yesterday afternoon leading the A65 to be closed for a while. Businesses and homes were also affected by flooding. Settle firefighters attended a flooded cellar in Procter Row, Kirkgate, Settle. The flooding was 1metre deep and was pumped into a drain at the bottom of the garden; the crew also attended a flooded workshop in Station Road.

Health officer seeks post-spring break pause for in-person classes

LANSING – The Ingham County Health Department says schools should suspend in-person classes after spring break as a precaution to prevent the continued spread of COVID-19. Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail issued a recommendation that schools move to remote learning for grades 6-12 for one week. She made the request because the county’s test positivity rate is 15.2%, nine people died of the virus last week and roughly 150 people are hospitalized. The county had not seen nine deaths in a week since January. “Looking at our percent positivity, case numbers and hospitalizations, I am deeply concerned,” Vail said in a statement. “That said, looking at our vaccination rates I am really hopeful. We are at a turning point in the pandemic.”

See what the Lansing State Journal staff are reading this March

Here is what Lansing State Journal team members recommend for your reading pleasure this month, or anytime. Once I Was You: A Memoir of Love and Hate in America by Maria Hinojosa As an immigrant from Mexico as a child to her adult life as a journalist in New York City, Maria Hinojosa tries to find her footing while being a voice for Latinas and Latinos on an individual level and nationally. This memoir educates readers in big and small ways, through powerful storytelling and the author s vulnerability. I’m a sucker for books written by or about journalists. – Stephanie Angel, executive editor
