Brattleboro Museum & Art Center partners with Retreat Farm in an artistic celebration of New England’s fishing traditions
Vermont Business Magazine Most New Englanders have seen ice shanties on frozen lakes, but few, if any, have seen an ice shanty shaped like a fish not to mention a stovepipe hat, a wishing well, or a wedge of cheese. The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC) and Retreat Farm present all this and more in the inaugural Artful Ice Shanties Design-Build Competition, an outdoor celebration of the delightful possibilities of winter.
Over a dozen artistic and ingenious ice shanties will be on view at Retreat Farm from February 13 to 28. Visitors are encouraged to check them out anytime between dawn and dusk, and to pair their visit with ice skating on the Retreat Meadows (conditions permitting) or walking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing on the trails at Retreat Farm. All activities are free and open to the public. ....

TOWNSHEND — Minimizing the impact on tax bills by cutting back on administrative costs and applying reserve funds, the West River Education District unanimously approved a $12,115,000 budget for fiscal year 2022.
The budget, which will be decided by voters via ballot March 24, represents a 0.66 percent or $80,000 increase over the prior fiscal year.
At a school board meeting held remotely Tuesday, Board Vice Chairman Joe Winrich said the budget committee discussed how to cut $500,000 from the budget to avoid tax rate increases, but felt uncomfortable proposing a reduction of workforce without discussing it with the board. The committee recommended using $300,000 from fund balance or reserves and committed to discussing how schools might be restructured to make them more affordable. ....

TOWNSHEND — Air system work, which caused delayed returns to in-person instruction at schools in the West River Education District, is wrapping up.
“West River is about 90 percent complete from the original project scope that we started with about four months ago,” Chris Medina, director of operations at Windham Central Supervisory Union, said at the West River Education District board meeting held remotely Dec. 21.
Medina said during a project meeting with Alliance Mechanical about a week prior to the board meeting, he learned about eight members of a service installation team were under quarantine for COVID-19 or sick at the time. A deadline extension for the project was approved by Efficiency Vermont so the district would still be eligible for grant funding. ....
