The Downtown Development Review Board on July 15 approved the exterior design for AXIS Hotels LLC’s estimated $17.6 million renovation of the historic Ambassador Hotel. The board voted 5-0 to grant AXIS final design approval for what the developer says will be a 100-room TRYP by Wyndham hotel in the 98-year-old building at 420 N. Julia St. The hotel also will have a restaurant and lounge. Bryan Greiner, president of AXIS parent company Augustine Development Group LLC, said the restaurant will be a “SoHo concept” with an “industrial vibe.” Greiner said the lounge will be a small speakeasy and wine cellar. The restaurant will be operated by Doral-based Victory Hospitality LLC owner Mark Mughabghab. ....

The Downtown Development Review Board voted 7-0 on June 10 to grant conceptual design approval for the 91-unit community on 3.45 acres next to Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park. The three-story town houses are a joint project of JWB Real Estate Capital LLC and Corner Lot Development Group. Johnson Commons finished second to Vestcor Companies Inc. in a 2019 Downtown Investment Authority request for proposals to develop the city-owned site, bounded by Adams, Lee, Houston and Forsyth streets. ....

The Downtown Development Review Board issued final approval May 13 for designs of Related Group’s $99.16 million apartment community and gave preliminary consent for the project’s restaurant on the Downtown Jacksonville Southbank. The board voted 6-0 to approve the 327-unit, eight-story multifamily project that would replace River City Brewing Co. at 835 Museum Circle. In a separate 6-0 vote, the board gave conceptual approval to the project’s nearly 5,000-square-foot restaurant fronting St. Johns River Park and Friendship Fountain. This was MSA Architects’ second redesign for the RD River City Brewery apartments, pushed by the board and DIA staff that said in January did not fit “contextually” along the St. Johns River. ....
