Teenagers sentenced for Clacton assault which left man with serious head injury


The couple’s son was assaulted outside the Moon and Starfish, in Marine Parade East, Clacton.
The victim, 25, who was with a friend at the time of the incident, was punched and then kicked several times after falling to the floor on November 10 2019.
He was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge in a critical condition.
Two 18-year-old men subsequently handed themselves in to Clacton police station.
Shortly after the incident, the victim’s heartbroken mother spoke of her fears her son could be permanently brain damaged.
Two men have now been sentenced for their part in the attack following a hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court. ....

Drivers face delays for road widening works in Tollgate, Stanway


Western Approach will initially close from the Western Approach roundabout to the Essex Yeomanry Way roundabout.
The same road will then be shut from the London Road roundabout to the Western Approach roundabout.
The first closure is due to take effect from March 2 and last until June 22.
The second is scheduled from August 6 until September 17.
Carriageway widening works are being undertaken by Walker Construction but an alternative route is available via Western Approach, London Road, Tollgate Roundabout, Essex Yeomanry Way, the Halstead Road roundabout, A1124 Halstead Road, the A12 slip from Stanway, the A12 slip to Stanway and Essex Yeomanry Way. ....

N DECEMBER 5TH a small group of people carefully removed a sign marking Cassland Road Gardens in London and laid it on the ground. Thus was one corner of the capital purged of its association with an offensive historical figure John Cass, an early-18th-century slave trader. It was a modest event, noticed by few, which suited the organisers. “It makes more sense to do it this way,” says Toyin Agbetu, a researcher and activist.

The other way is more spectacular. Last June a Bristol crowd inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement pulled down a statue of Edward Colston, another slave trader, and rolled it into the harbour. In the same week activists in Glasgow erected alternative street signs, replacing tobacco barons with black heroes. Elsewhere, statues were daubed with paint. Vigilante groups some polite and peaceful, others not mobilised to defend cherished figures. ....
