Petrifying Climate Change | Hakai Magazine

Article body copy
A new method for combatting climate change feels like a bit of modern-day alchemy: scientists have figured out how to take carbon dioxide out of the ocean and turn it into harmless rock.
For every tonne of carbon dioxide we pump into the air, roughly a quarter of it gets absorbed by the ocean like a giant, watery sponge. All of this excess carbon dioxide is acidifying the water and threatening organisms, such as those with calcium carbonate shells, that are sensitive to the change.
To avert this fate, carbon emissions need to drop fast. But many scientists also believe that active carbon capture deliberately pulling carbon dioxide out of the environment will be a necessary step to help curb, and potentially even reverse, the rise in emissions responsible for countless environmental impacts. However, capturing enough carbon to make a difference is a massive task, one that has so far proved challenging and expensive. ....

Producing Hydrogen While Storing CO2 in the Oceans

REMOVING excess CO
2 from the air, producing negative emissions hydrogen, and reversing ocean acidification are the three main goals of clean technology company Planetary Hydrogen. I spoke to founders CEO Mike Kelland and CTO Greg Rau about their plans to use their
electrochemistry process to produce hydrogen while also capturing CO
2 from the air which can then be safely stored in the oceans as a carbonate.
The Earth has a natural cycle to regulate CO
2 on geological timescales. CO
2 is released from sources such as volcanoes, and then eventually is stored in sediments, the ocean, or living organisms. However, humans burning fossil fuels has released excessive amounts of CO ....

Clean Energy Is Vital – but Still Not Enough
There are some problems clean energy from wind and sun cannot solve. Two new studies provide a roadmap of the challenges ahead.
By Tim Radford
The journey to a world of clean energy without fossil fuels – essential if humankind is to contain global warming to no more than 1.5°C by 2100 – won’t be easy.
Electric cars may be on the road in increasing numbers, but trucks may have to carry heavy goods for 1,000 miles. For some deliveries, there is still no substitute for liquid fuel. ....

Watch now: Lillian Renfro takes flight toward Eagle Scout goal

DECATUR — MacArthur High School freshman Lillian Renfro, 15, wanted the community to be a part of her quest to become an Eagle Scout.
As a member of the Boy Scouts of America female Troop 911, Lillian decided her project would be to refurbish an area of Whitmore Park that has a nickname of the graffiti wall. She was aware of the wall located near Lake Decatur from walks with her family.
“There’s a lot of graffiti on it. It’s not very appealing to the eye,” she said. “We see a lot of destruction of park property here.”
With Decatur gaining a reputation for its murals, Lillian found the obscure wall a good candidate for a clean-up and a new mural. ....

ASPN | Upending Global Hydrogen with Dr. Greg Rau

February 20, 2021
The greatest carbon sink on the planet: The Deep Ocean
On this episode of the Changing Waters podcast, host Brad Warren speaks with Dr. Greg Rau of
Planetary Hydrogen about using ocean chemistry to capture and store CO2, the toolkit for ocean carbon removal options, and why Greg thinks that the abiotic, natural chemistry of the ocean shows particular promise. Planetary Hydrogen is upending the global hydrogen market with the first scalable, truly carbon-negative form of hydrogen production. Their process converts greenhouse gases directly out of the air into an antacid for oceans damaged by climate change. This Ocean Air Capture (OAC) system is the first to be able to both remove the carbon dioxide that is causing climate change and to restore ocean chemistry. ....
