Nyack Mourns Victims of Police Brutality

On Monday night religious leaders of every denomination gathered in solidarity on Nyack’s Main Street to memorialize Daunte Wright, a young father was fatally shot by a Minneapolis police officer during a traffic stop last Sunday. Hezekiah Easter Park was adorned with pictures of not only Wright but other recent victims of police brutality as the community gathered to grieve. As much a sermon as it was a vigil, Rockland’s religious leaders used the event to encourage everyone in their community to reject hate and violence and remember the value of human life.
“We come here today while we should be beaten down busted and disgusted we have come to stand one more time,” said Pastor Greg Merriweather, “god has given us the strength to stand here on this evening.” Pastor Merriweather and his fellow religious leaders urged the crowd not to succumb to apathy, and instead advocate for a more inclusive society in the face of adversity. “We cannot become desensitized to th ....

ALBANY – The walls were closing in on Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
It was the afternoon of March 7 and Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, a fellow Democrat and the first Black woman to serve as state Senate majority leader, had just called for his resignation. He worked the phones, trying to keep rank-and-file lawmakers from following the senator s lead.
Cuomo, facing sexual-misconduct allegations and a looming nursing-home scandal, needed a show of support. And on March 8, he got it.
With cameras rolling, more than 20 pastors and reverends from influential Black and Latino churches literally stood behind Cuomo at an event at the Javits Center in Manhattan. He held a similar event near Syracuse the next day, and again Monday on Long Island. ....

Governor Cuomo Issues Letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services Urging Equity and Expeditious Distribution of COVID-19 Vaccine Program

We stand together in expressing serious concern with the Trump administration s vaccine distribution plan. While we are encouraged by recent reports regarding the vaccines efficacy, there is urgent work to be done to ensure vaccination efforts are both expeditious and fair.

Governors need federal funding in order to execute comprehensive distribution plans to guarantee that all communities have access to the vaccine. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials estimates that a comprehensive vaccine distribution program would cost approximately $8 billion. To date, the Trump Administration has administered a mere $200 million to the states.

Without adequate funding, distribution will not be equitable. COVID-19 has laid bare chronic health disparities in our country that led communities of color to suffer disproportionately from this virus. Communities of color disproportionately suffer from pre-existing conditions, such as asthm ....
