APA heads of gas shortage with $270m grid expansion

APA Group will embark on a major expansion of its east coast gas pipeline grid after signing a new three-year gas transportation deal with Origin Energy.
The $270 million expansion will increase the capacity of APAâs pipelines ability to transport Queensland gas to southern markets by 25 per cent and will help head off a shortage in winter gas supply in Victoria forecast to hit by 2023 or 2024.
APA will use the expansion to carry gas for Origin Energy.Â
The decision to proceed with the expansion follows the blocking last month of AGL Energyâs LNG import project in Victoria by the state government, which was also aimed at heading off shortages in the state. Domestic gas pipelines to bring Queensland gas south are in part in competition with LNG import terminals planned by several rival ventures in NSW, Victoria and South Australia. ....

Origin inks gas supply pact

Origin, APLNG ink gas deal
Origin Energy has signed a four-year gas deal with Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG), the company said in a May 5 statement.
Under the deal, Origin has secured up to an additional 91 petajoules of gas from January 2022 at a Japan-Korea Marker (JKM)-linked price, with volumes to be shaped to higher demand winter months. The company said the supply deal will help alleviate a potential forecast shortfall in supply identified by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).
APLNG, a joint venture comprising Origin, ConocoPhillips and Sinopec, is Australia’s largest producer of coalbed methane and supplies gas to Queensland’s domestic gas market, while also processing CBM into LNG for exports. Origin owns a 37.5% stake in the business. ....

Origin Energy is understood to have opted to cut back generation at its huge coal power station in NSW in favour of buying cheap electricity from the wholesale market early this year in an example of the responses by traditional generators to the soft demand and prices plaguing the sector.
The approach by Origin, which partly explains the drop in the running rate of Eraring noted in the Australian Energy Market Operatorâs March quarter report, would result in cost savings as it took advantage of lower prices to buy from the pool rather than running its own, higher-cost plant. ....
