SIR – No one seems to believe that the British (and US) mission in Afghanistan was a victory, but General Lord Dannatt (Comment, July 2) overlooks key antecedents in his outline of the recent history of intervention in that country.
Notably, the proto-Taliban mujahideen under Mohammed Omar were actively supported by the United States (and Pakistan), as they were fighting the Soviet Union, which occupied Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989. We see the consequences today.

SIR – Amid the anger over the collapse of charges against ex-soldiers, please remember Staff Sergeant Malcolm Banks, Royal Engineers, acting as infantry.
In 1972, reacting to a blast bomb incident near the Short Strand, east Belfast, he rapidly arrived on the scene with his men, two minutes before the IRA ceasefire was to begin at midnight. He was killed: shot in the back.
No follow-up by his men, sent to protect the public, could therefore take place, so they carried his body into the hall where he and they were stationed – in St James’s church – and laid him down. Like them and the church, he was a Catholic. ....

SIR – I was furious when I read the letter (December 28) from Dr Claire Barker, who attempted to volunteer as a Covid-19 vaccinator but was unable to supply the 21 documents demanded during the registration process.
I was further dismayed by your report yesterday that Nightingale hospitals are empty because, according to Saffron Cordery, the deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, “we can’t conjure staff out of thin air”.
It seems that, in the battle against Covid-19, we are witnessing the triumph of bureaucracy over desperately needed creativity. ....
