Updated: Share Article AAA Social activist and founder of Jan Sangram Parishad S.R. Hiremath has urged the Shivamogga police to arrest the people who attacked activist Girish Achar immediately. In a press conference at Shivamogga on Saturday, Mr. Hiremath said Mr. Achar had been fighting illegal activities in the district. He fought a legal battle against the illegal grant of forest land and got a favourable order from the courts. “Some people with vested interests abducted him and assaulted him at Mattimane in Hosanagar taluk recently. Later, a false case was filed against him,” he said. He also expressed suspicion of the police playing a role in the filing of a false case against Mr. Achar. “The police should probe the case considering the CCTV footage of the incident and arrest all those involved,” he said. ....

Social Activist Gireesh Achar, on whose petition Karnataka High Court recently quashed denotification of 260 acres of forest area in Shivamogga district, was allegedly assaulted by unknown people near Mattimane in Hosanagar taluk on Monday. Girish Achar, 41 has been fighting against forest encroachment, illegal stone quarrying and sand mining for more than 15 years. While he was on the way to Byndoor from Hosanagar on Monday, unknown people stopped him and forcibly took him in their two-wheeler. After travelling for two kilometres they assaulted him seriously. “I don’t know who they are. Don’t know why they did beat me up. This is the third time happening with me in the last two years”, Mr. Achar told ....

The court set aside the notification, issued on February 23, 2017 under Section 28 of the Karnataka Forest Act, 1963, while holding that the State government could not have exercised its statutory power without the prior approval from the Central government under the provisions of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. ....
