Submitted by MPK Photography PITTSTON – The city conducted its first-ever Christmas decoration contest during the 2020 holiday season. City officials said they were pleased with the participation from the community and look forward to the 2021 holiday season. Mary Kroptavich, Pittston’s Main Street manager, said there were four judged categories: People’s Choice Award, Most Creative Award, the Clark Griswold Award and Most Original Business Award. “We had a great turnout for the very first one,” Kroptavich said. “I believe we had about 20 houses participate this year and about 15 businesses taking part. I was quite happy, and hopefully next year the word gets out for next year to get more participants.”

Hornell homes sparkle in decorating contest

Madonna Figura Simon HORNELL A smiling cowboy, Santa riding an elephant, and a group of red-capped gnomes have become Hornell’s newest neighbors during the Christmas holiday season. They can be found hanging out at homes that Hornell Partners for Growth judged to be the best decorated. HPG’s judges, including members of the Canisteo-Greenwood senior class, surveyed sparkling scenes across the Maple City last week and found the judging to be tough. “Our judges were very impressed with all of the houses that decorated this year. They decided that because of the great displays that some of the categories have multiple winners. They also wanted to add a category for Best Decorated Street: Maple Street,” according to HPG chair Michelle Pogue. Approximately 30 outstanding residences received a gift bag containing a Hornell for the Holidays 2020 ornament and a passport to savings card.

Wahpeton couple win city lighting contest for second year

Santa Claus, waving to passersby traveling up Ninth Street North in Wahpeton, nearly blended into the happy holiday hullabaloo. “It’s nice to see so many people decorating this year,” he said Tuesday, Dec. 22. “We’ve certainly got the weather for it.” Wahpeton announced the winners of the second annual Griswold Award holiday lighting contest. Once again, the winners were David and Jackie Paul, 310 Ninth St. N. The Pauls have been acclaimed for their home and lawn decorations, which this year include homemade figurines of the Grinch, his dog Max and Cindy Lou Who among the familiar favorites. “Jackie made the patterns and I cut them out of wood,” David Paul said. “It’s all due to Jackie’s ingenuity. We like to change it up a little and we just enjoy that people enjoy our decorations.”
