Quarry company runs into a wall of opposition to expansion plan for Winston-Salem facility


Vulcan Materials Company officials who logged onto their laptops last Tuesday to discuss a company rezoning request no doubt knew they could be walking into a (virtual) lion’s den.
But they had no idea they’d be on the menu. And maybe, just maybe, having a bite taken out of their backside might have caused some rethinking by week’s end.
The company, which has operated a rock quarry off N.C. 8/Germanton Road since 1959, had formally requested rumored rezoning for a 78-acre parcel it owns nearby to build a holding facility to store sand and rock byproducts produced during blasting. ....

SALISBURY, N.C. (WBTV) - The Salisbury Community Appearance Commission (CAC) is pleased to announce the winners of the 15th annual Holiday Storefront Decorations Awards. The event celebrates downtown merchants whose window displays best capture the holiday season.

Community groups in Winston-Salem to get more than $1 million in new county spending


On top of that, the county will be spending another $2.8 million within county departments, restoring budgets that were trimmed 3% earlier and hiring additional social workers and public-health nurses, as well as someone to help guide the county toward clean-energy goals. Money is in there as well to increase employee pay.
From the higher projected revenues, commissioners approved new spending of more than $7.2 million on Thursday.
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will get an extra $2.9 million from that amount, plus another $500,000 from a separate coronavirus relief funds for ventilation-system improvements meant to improve air quality in the schools.
While many of the groups getting additional money are ones that help the needy, commissioners took no action on the demands of more than 30 anti-eviction protesters who gathered outside Thursday while they met. ....
