Elmore gets $75,000 grant for launch ramp on Portage River

The Village of Elmore will get a $75,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to improve its paddling adventures on the Portage River this year.
With the Ottawa County waterway being developed as the Portage River Water Trail, the grant will be used to develop a new ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible canoe and kayak launch and improved loading and unloading area at Harry Witty Park. ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio Seven public access improvement projects received a total of $492,920 this year through the Paddling Enhancement Grant, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The primary goal of the Paddling Enhancement Grant is to increase access and opportunities for hand-powered watercraft.
The Village of Pomeroy was along the grant recipients for this round. The $75,000 award to Pomeroy will go toward a new ADA compliant canoe/kayak launch, gangway, and dock for safe river access for non-motorized boats.
“Paddle sports continue to drive the sky-high participation in water recreation,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “We’re proud to support our local economies and provide Ohioans with quality opportunities for recreation on the water. Just remember to wear a life jacket!” ....

GENOA, Ohio Two Ottawa County communities have always had a connection through proximity, but now they have a physical connection that will allow neighbors from both communities to enjoy nature and stay healthy.
The project has been in the works since 2011, and was mostly funded through Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) grants.
It cost around $2.5 million, with the majority of the money going into repurposing a former railroad track and building multiple pedestrian bridges over creeks.
Now, the villages hope the new way of casual travel means more neighbors will be visiting the neighboring villages. ....
