Robin Walker ROBIN WALKER has been appointed as leader of the Agricultural Professional Practice (APP) postgraduate distance learning programme. Mr Walker s long career at SRUC started in 1999, when he was employed at Craibstone as an oilseeds and novel crop agronomist after completing his PhD at the University of London on nitrogen use in low input cropping systems. He was involved in agronomic research as well as teaching on several undergraduate courses across a range of subjects, mostly within the Agriculture and Countryside Management programmes. He also helped develop some of the first distance-learning specific teaching materials, including a course on Organic Farming which won an Institute of IT Training ‘Online Course of the Year’ award, presented in 2001. ....

Lantra Scotland’s annual awards evening celebrates the achievements of the country’s top land-based and aquaculture trainees, many of whom have continued to navigate new ways of working over the last year despite the challenges of the pandemic. Perthshire farmer and stand-up comedian, Jim Smith hosted the online event, alongside Lantra Scotland Director, Liz Barron-Majerik. The awards were officially opened by Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Kate Forbes, who praised the nominees for continuing to develop their skills and for helping to drive forward their rural communities, making them sustainable places to live, work and thrive. ....
HART District council has pledged to learn lessons after multiple crews tackled out of control contractors bonfires on Hazeley Heath last week. Firefighters from Hartley Wintney, Fleet, Yateley and Rushmoor were called to the scene around 2.12pm on Friday afternoon (February 26), where two unattended contractor bonfires were “out of control”. People were asked to avoid the northern area of the heathland near Hook while firefighters tackled the flames. The fire service advised Hart District Council’s Countryside Management team that “no further fires should be lit to dispose of cleared brush and cut trees in this area”. A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service added: Crews from Hartley Wintney, Fleet, Rushmoor and Yateley attended a large fire in the open on Hazeley Heath at 14:12. ....
