Howard John Conrad 1946-2021

On March 14, 2021, our family lost a loving husband to Vaun; a proud father to Brett, Bryan, and Brandon; a doting grandfather to Parker Laine and a baby boy due in July, a loyal brother to Roger and Jeff and a caring uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews. Of course, his family would not have been complete without his two beautiful daughters in law, Shannon and Donna-Marie.  Howard John Conrad was born Feb. 22, 1946 in Oceanside, Calif.; however, his heart always resided in northern Minnesota and later in Michigan. Howard earned a Bachelor of Arts from Central Michigan University and a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University, with education being his focus in both degrees. It was in Michigan in 1967, where he began his career as educator, it is also where he met the love of his life Vaun Kay. They were married on Aug. 8, 1970. In 1983, he coached the Flint Hamady Boy’s basketball team to a 25-2 record, falling in the state championship game. He was later voted 1982-1

LSSC honors 5 high school counselors in Lake, Sumter counties

Amy Henges arrived in Sumter County from New York almost two years ago with a wealth of counseling and educational experience. In 25 years in the field, Henges has taught young children and been a counselor for K-12. Now at The Villages High School, Henges is among five area counselors honored recently by Lake-Sumter State College.  It’s a dramatic difference in understanding what the students need to do for the college applications process, Henges said of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s completely different for colleges now, what they’re requiring, but it’s also been a lot of changes in flexibility and how we present to the students and support them to make sure they have the classes they need.

State leaders: Tax increase would threaten new - jobs

As new members of the Sumter County commission are pushing for a tax increase that would punish new business, leaders at the state level are igniting their strategy to lure it to the Sunshine State. Ex-Democrats Oren Miller and Gary Search are championing the reversal of the county’s longstanding pro-business strategy, seeking to dramatically raise road impact fees on new homes and businesses countywide. Search has pressed to nearly double the fees from the current 40% of the maximum allowed by law to 75%; Miller wants a 150% increase to the full maximum. Longtime Republican commissioners Doug Gilpin, Gary Breeden and Craig Estep tabled the matter until July after a standing-room only crowd pleaded with them earlier this month to reconsider the severity of the economic fallout.
