Cranford Police Deploy Sensory Communication Kits in Squad Cars

CRANFORD - A forward-thinking police officer, a generous Cranford-based business, and the Police Department’s Community Outreach Unit combined efforts to create and deploy “Sensory Communication Kits” in all primary radio cars in Cranford.
According to the release, Officer John Rattigan, a 16-year veteran of the force and paramedic, saw the value in providing officers with a kit comprised of self-soothing tools, ear protection, eye protection, and whiteboards to be used during crisis situations in which hypo and hyper-sensitivities may affect an officer’s interaction with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). After he assembled a prototype and pitched the idea to the organization, the Cranford Police Department created an additional seven kits to outfit police vehicles in the Patrol Division, Juvenile Bureau and Community Outreach Unit. One kit will also be housed inside police headquarters. ....

CRANFORD, NJ Thanks to the watchful eyes of an off-duty Hillside police officer, the Cranford police were able to charge a Roselle Park man Tuesday night after a local BP gas station was robbed, they said.
The Cranford Police Department said they responded at 10:54 p.m. Tuesday to a reported robbery at the station located at 475 E. North Ave., they said.
They said the gas attendant told them that a white male displayed a handgun and demanded cash from him. The suspect then fled the scene in a white Jeep Cherokee heading east on East North Avenue. ....

Heroic Officers Reunite With Grateful Parents and Newborn After Emergency Delivery
Two New Jersey police officers have been reunited with two very grateful parents and their new baby after an impromptu delivery at the couple’s home.
Patrolling Cranford officers, Thomas Bell and James Knight met expecting parents Gina and Noberto Chaves on the morning of Dec. 20, 2020, when they responded to a 911 call from the Chaveses’ home address. Gina’s water had suddenly broken and the baby was already crowning.
Bell, a 21-year veteran of the force, quickly ascertained the situation and made an on-the-spot call to help deliver the baby right there, according to a Facebook post by the Cranford Police Department. ....
