(Photos Courtesy of Villanova Athletics) Everything was set up for a thrilling game heading into Thursday night’s Big East Semifinal between Georgetown and Villanova. The teams had met twice prior once a blowout, once a close Hoya win. They came in with contrasting paths as Georgetown dropped its last outing with a disappointing performance vs. Loyola. Villanova, meanwhile, was earning some well-deserved buzz after drubbing Lehigh. The stakes were there, too. With the Big East’s AQ the ultimate goal, the semifinal game also had tremendous potential to boost an at-large resume with another quality win. Throw in a nice night, a sizable, raucous crowd of fans inside Providence’s Chapey Field, a national TV platform and it’s hardly a surprise that Georgetown’s 14-12 win was one of the most exciting of a full slate of conference tournament games this week. ....
Inside Lacrosse Photo: Chris McNulty) There are four ways to examine Loyola s 11-9 win over Georgetown at the Ridley Athletic Complex on Thursday night: through a 10-year lens, through a three-month lens, through a 60-minute lens and through a 60-second lens. From 2008 through 2019, the Greyhounds won 11-of-12 matchups in the series, through the one-sided nature was reflected in the final scores eight of those games were decided by two goals or fewer, including 2011’s epic four-OT matchup. It’s an important game for both programs, Jesuit universities in the Mid-Atlantic with a lot of shared DNA. Coming into this game, though, there is little question the Hoyas were favored, amassing a 10-1 record, having avenged their lone loss to the season against Denver 10 days prior. The Hounds, on the other hand, were 6-5 and playing without three starters in attackman Joey Kamish, who is done for the season due to injury, A/M Evan James, who was held out due to lingering in ....

Who’s your pick? Denver Why? I’ve struggled over this one, but I’m landing on the Pioneers. Georgetown is a much different team with returns from injury, and I expect the venue change will make this closer than first time around. But the Pioneers’ third-quarter surge against Villanova just showed me a lot to like about Denver. Alex Simmons has added a lot at attack, Jackson Morrill is the most inconspicuous star player ever, and even without Ethan Walker last week, the offense showed it can be marvelous. And, the way Jack Thompson has been playing deserves some attention. ....
Thu Apr 15 2021 | Patrick Stevens | College PHOTO BY JOHN STROHSACKER James Reilly (.642) has won plenty of faceoffs for Georgetown. At 8-1, Georgetown probably doesn’t need an infusion of good news as much as most teams. Nonetheless, the Hoyas were happy to receive it last week. Defenseman Gibson Smith, who hadn’t played since the Feb. 21 season opener at Villanova because of an injury suffered in practice, returned for Georgetown’s 10-8 victory at Marquette. Considering what’s next for the Hoyas a rematch with Big East leader Denver the timing is exceptional. “He has played so much lacrosse for us and been through so many different scenarios, sometimes you just have to plug your way through them,” Georgetown coach Kevin Warne said. “It’s great to have him as that field general. Quite honestly, it just helps everybody else. It gets people on the same page and is that constant voice that everybody remembers. It’s like, ‘He’s back, ....
