Approximately 800 Department of Defense employees and members of the military community who received COVID-19 vaccines at Fort George G. Meade on two days this month will likely need to get a third dose after officials discovered some Moderna vaccine vials were improperly stored.

Officials said there is no risk for potential harm for the hundreds of COVID-19vaccine recipients who received a potentially compromised dose after 80 vials were improperly handed outside of the manufacturer’s recommended temperature range. The error, which was discovered at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center (KACC) at Fort Meade, Maryland, impacts approximately 800 doses that were distributed on two different dates earlier this month.

At Fort Meade, 800 doses of Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine were improperly handled, according to Pentagon officials.
Moderna and the Defense Health Agency conducted a review and determined the doses nevertheless pose no risk to those at Fort Meade who received them. However, everyone who received one of the affected shots is being offered a repeat dose, since it s unclear if the vaccines will offer the expected protection if handled outside their recommended temperature range.
