Desert X has announced that the third edition of its exhibition will open March 12 – May 16 in the Coachella Valley, Southern California. Curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and Co-curator César García-Alvarez, it will explore the desert as both a place and idea, acknowledging the realities of people who reside there and the political, social and cultural contexts that shape their stories. Desert X is produced by The Desert Biennial and is free and open to the public.
Its guiding purposes and principles include presenting public exhibitions of art that respond meaningfully to the conditions of desert locations, the environment and indigenous communities; promoting cultural exchange and education programmes that foster dialogue and understanding among cultures and communities about shared artistic, historical, and societal issues; and ....

Desert X 2021 announces artists. These are the upcoming works


A large maze structure by Mexico-based artist Eduardo Sarabia. A sculptural wall created by Saudi Arabia artist Zahrah Alghamdi that connects the Southern California landscape to other deserts around the world. A smoke sculpture by American feminist artist Judy Chicago. 
These are some of the artworks you ll see across the Coachella Valley as part of the outdoor biennial art exhibition Desert X when it returns March 12 to May 16. 
The exhibition, which offers digital and in-person opportunities to view work across 40 miles of the desert, is being curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and co-curator César García-Alvarez.

The Desert X biennial staging site-specific, sometimes monumental artworks across the Coachella Valley announced its project lineup this week, and a standout among the 13 artists is Judy Chicago.
The 81-year-old
dating to
the 1950s,
has long been injecting the feminine into male-dominated land art. Colored smoke in her fireworks pieces, which she’s been producing since the late 1960s, is meant to soften or “feminize” the surrounding landscape. Her new work for Desert X, which opens March 12, is very much an extension of this.
Chicago will create one of her smoke sculptures for the exhibition “Living Smoke: A Tribute to the Living Desert.” The ephemeral work is a collaboration with Chicago’s longtime partner on “pyrotechnic performances,” Chris Souza of Pyro Spectaculars.
