Mullum to Bruns Paddle is a great day out for all the family. The Mullum2Bruns Paddle is on this weekend, Sunday May 23 and it’s geared up to be a fantastic day out for all the family. The paddle will be held on the Brunswick River, starting at Heritage Park in Mullumbimby at 7.30am and ending at the Terrace Park in Brunswick Heads. The 10km event attracts 1,000 paddlers each year and raises funds for the Brunswick Life Saving Club, Marine Rescue Brunswick and Brunswick Heads Visitor Information Centre. Family fun There’ll be family fun activities at Terrace Park in Brunswick Heads from 9.30am to 4pm with information and food stalls, a jumping castle, a fitness activity and sand art, a dragon boat flotilla and a duck race. ....

Maine’s major police oversight bill stalls as sheriffs roll back support Contributed • April 28, 2021 By Erin Rhoda, Bangor Daily News Staff After backing legislation that would bring more oversight to elected county sheriffs, the Maine Sheriffs’ Association withdrew its support this week, potentially torpedoing the bill’s chances of being passed by the full Maine Legislature and showing the difficulty of bringing legislative changes even amid widespread calls for more police accountability. Upon learning that the sheriffs’ association was opposing LD 375, which would create a process for sheriffs to be placed on administrative leave when they are suspected of unethical or criminal behavior, the Legislature’s state and local government committee voted 10-2, with one lawmaker absent, to recommend that the bill ought not to pass. ....

They’re Calling Me Home, recorded with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, will be released April 9 on Nonesuch Records. Giddens and Turrisi, who both live in Ireland when they aren’t on tour, have been there since March 2020 due to the pandemic. The two expats found themselves drawn to the music of their native and adoptive countries of America, Italy, and Ireland during lockdown. Exploring the emotions brought up by the moment, Giddens and Turrisi decamped to Hellfire, a small studio on a working farm outside of Dublin, to record these songs over six days. The result is They’re Calling Me Home, a twelve-track album that speaks of the longing for the comfort of home as well as the metaphorical “call home” of death, which has been a tragic reality for so many during the COVID-19 crisis. ....
