Residents give comments at 1041 application meeting


Salidan John McGowan gave a counter presentation to the Nestlé Waters North America economic impact study and Tom Bomer of Unbottle Chaffee County gave comments during the 1041 permit hearing Tuesday.
Chaffee County Commissioners acting as the 1041 permit authority listened to McGowan and Bomer during a public hearing.  
Many of the comments during the meeting focused on the impact plastic bottles have to do with the environment and the possible effects of the permitted water use on local drought conditions.
Several Chaffee County residents also expressed opinions, pro and con, regarding the renewal of the permit and the impact the operation has on the county, during the public comment portion of the public hearing. ....

Chaffee Rec Plan up for public review


The Chaffee Recreation Council offers opportunity for the public to review elements of the Chaffee Rec Plan starting today on the Envision Chaffee County website.
The plan’s goals are to protect natural resources, maintain exceptional outdoor experiences and sustain the economic benefits of recreation tourism.
Initiatives potentially include: 
• Getting the right infrastructure such as more restrooms 
• Focusing development like new trails near towns
• Protecting wildlife with habitat improvements and voluntary seasonal closures in sensitive areas
• Encouraging improved user behaviors and enforcing the rules
• Supporting rural landscapes as ranchers struggle with the costly impacts of recreation growth on their operations. ....

A new website at ChaffeeProvides.org at its essence is a local food guide that is much more compelling than a list of names and numbers.
“We feature ranchers and farmers to connect them, their stories and their products to local consumers,” said Envision Chaffee County outreach coordinator Kim Marquis. 
Envision partnered with Guidestone Colorado to create the online directory with grant funding from the Chaffee County Community Foundation and a Chaffee Common Ground mini-grant.
ChaffeeProvides.org helps consumers buy locally and enjoy knowing who and where their food comes from, Marquis said. The website is an easy information access point to find ranchers and farmers selling their products, as well as brick-and-mortar markets and restaurants, and food banks that provide resources to community members. ....

Mitigation efforts catch on


The efforts are unique in that they are not solely reliant on the U.S. Forest Service.
These mitigation efforts are collaborative in effort through Envision Chaffee County, National Forest Foundation and American Forest Foundation. The efforts are considered part of a priority landscape by the Rocky Mountain Restoration Initiative.
Envision Chaffee County is a local movement that facilitates longer-term actions and views for the sake of healthy forests, wildlife, water, agriculture and the economy.
American Forest Foundation, a Rocky Mountain Restoration Initiative partner, empowers family forest landowners to be active stewards of their own land. 
The Initiative has more than 40 partners across Colorado that deliver cross-boundary solutions for priority landscapes. Montana-based National Forest Foundation also partners with Rocky Mountain Restoration Initiative, and is the official nonprofit partner of the U.S. Forest Service to bring people together to restore ....
