Buhanga breathes life into conservation

Summary
In his last position, Edgar Buhanga served as the deputy director in charge of planning, monitoring and research. In that capacity, he oversaw the system of protected areas, research and monitoring of animal species both inside and outside protected areas, veterinary services to ensure wildlife is healthy as well as restocking from one area to another.
On October 20, 2020 he retired. A father of five and teetotaler, Buhanga’s initial connection with tourism and travel was in 1989. Public service advertised jobs and he applied. In January 1990, he was hired as a game biologist and researcher at the current Uganda Wildlife Education and Conservation Centre, also known as Entebbe Zoo.  ....

Presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat has pledged to compensate the victims of the Kichwamba and Kasese killings.  
While speaking on a talk-show on Clouds FM in Fort Portal City on Monday, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate said the killings in Kichwamba and Kasese were unfortunate.
“We are going to be counting the numbers critically and compensating them. This is something we want to undertake and compensation is not only going to be limited to lives, but property and this is going to be countrywide where people lost their lives due to conflicts,” Mr Amuriat said. ....

Even as young adults, male chimps are ‘mama’s boys’

Even tough male chimps need their moms. Chimpanzees live in a male-dominated society, where most of their valuable allies are other males. However, as young male chimpanzees become adults, they continue to maintain tight bonds with their mothers, a new study reveals. And for about one-third of them, this mother-son relationship is the closest one they have.
The dramatic changes of adolescence are difficult for chimps, just like they are for humans, says Elizabeth Lonsdorf, a primatologist at Franklin & Marshall College who was not involved in the study. And “sure enough,” she says, “their moms remain a key social partner during this turbulent time.” ....

Turyagumanawe discovered a niche in  tour guiding

By 6am, Paul Turyagumanawe’s breakfast is served. He is in a hurry to go for the morning game drive, to catch the hippos grazing.
As a tour guide, he wakes up each day to prepare for the day’s tour activities. His checklist includes reviewing the guest list and coordinating with the chef to ensure that breakfast and packed lunch is ready for the tourists. 
After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 2010, Turyagumanawe envisioned himself as one of the prominent lawyers of his generation. 
Growing up, the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Patrice Lumumba were his role models.  ....
