Defra seeks support for Gene Editing of crops and livestock

GENE EDITING involves accentuating or suppressing genes withn an organism s own natural genetic sequence
PERMISSION for gene editing in agriculture is back on the political agenda, following the launch of a Defra consultation on a potential change in UK law to allow the technology into the food chain.
Under current European law, Gene Editing is lumped together with Genetic Modification, and as such is excluded from use in producing novel crop plants and livestock.
Defra is touting the GE consultation as an early consequence of its post-Brexit independence from EU law, potentially giving UK farmers a tech edge over their continental counterparts. ....

Oxford Farming Conference: Gene editing rules to be reviewed

It could see them regulated in the same way as conventional crops and livestock.
The consultation will also begin a longer-term project to gather evidence on updating the approach to genetic modification, by gathering information on what controls are needed and how to deliver them, officials said.
Gene editing’s potential includes making crops and livestock more resistant to pests or disease, cutting the need for pesticides and improving animal welfare, and making food have healthier impacts such as lowering blood pressure or reducing the risk of cancer, officials said.
Professor Gideon Henderson, the Environment Department’s (Defra) chief scientific advisor, said potential environmental benefits included increasing productivity which could free up land for rewilding and tree planting, reducing the need for chemicals and fertilisers and creating crops that were more resilient to future extremes such as a drier climate. ....

Gene editing of crops and livestock may soon be permitted in England for the first time under a consultation launched by the government on Thursday.
Ministers said changing the current strict rules, which originate from the EU and make gene editing for crops and livestock almost impossible, would bring widespread benefits to consumers and farmers, including healthier food, environmental improvements and better animal welfare.
But some environmental and animal welfare groups raised concerns that loosening the rules could lead to lower animal welfare, for instance if the technology was used to promote faster growth over animal health, or to enable livestock to be kept in crowded conditions. ....
