Philip Gruber âSoil health influences crop yield, farm economics, and ecological functions on farms,â OâNeil said. âQuantifiable data on the role of soil compaction in soil health and crop performance is missing. This project is designed to fill that knowledge gap.â Cornell University Nutrient Management Spear Program Director Quirine M. Ketterings will provide data analysis. Ketteringsâ earlier research has informed the design of this new project. In a 2019 study of nine conventionally-tilled dairy farm corn fields in northern New York, compaction was found at the surface and at depths of six to 18 inches in all nine fields with consistent and highly variable levels of compaction within each field and among the fields. ....
MEXICO â Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County (CCE Oswego) will host a free online workshop through Zoom from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 on the implications of a changing climate on the future of agriculture. This workshop will introduce climate science and why it matters from a global perspective. It will also highlight practical solutions that the agricultural community can adopt to become more resilient in the face of a shifting climate. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) stated that 2020 tied with 2016 for the hottest year on record. Also, the 10 hottest years ever recorded have all occurred since 2005. Climate projections show that under a high emission scenario, Oswego County could likely see an average of 18 days above 90°F by 2050 and 58 days above 90°F by the year 2100. From a historical perspective, from 1958 to 2013 there was only one year, 1988, when Oswego County averaged 10 days above 90°F. Not only this, ....
The images coming out of the Upper Midwest and High Plains region of the U.S. this spring are reminiscent of the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Relentless wind coupled with dry conditions have led to severe soil erosion, and the situation was made worse in areas lacking cover crops. The drifting topsoil covered roads, filled ditches and gave fertile fields a desert-like appearance. Drought persisting through the winter in North and South Dakota, and the northern half of Minnesota, made the fields particularly vulnerable when the winds arrived. The Foster County Soil Conservation District in North Dakota reported that a dust storm on March 29-30 resulted in topsoil losses of 12 inches or more in some areas. Soybean fields, including no-till acres, were especially vulnerable to the windy conditions, according to the district. ....
