Beta closes raft of deals for Kindred

Beta Cinema, the sales and co-financing subsidiary of European media group Beta Film, has announced a number of global sales for its psychological thriller Kindred with companies such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and the Middle East.
Produced by Dominic Norris and Jack Lowden through their recently launched, Scottish based production company Reiver Pictures, Kindred is the first feature by Joe Marcantonio after his acclaimed short film Red Light starring Jessie Buckley and Martin McCann. When her boyfriend dies suddenly in an accident, psychologically fragile mother-to-be Charlotte is taken in by his family - but they seem increasingly obsessed with her every move. Plagued by mysterious hallucinations, her suspicions grow and panic builds - but just how far will they go in their desire to control her and her unborn baby. ....

Octavia Butler walked a singular path. A writer from her poverty-stricken childhood to her death in 2006 at the age of 58, she committed her life to turning speculative fiction into a home for Black expression. In her hands, the genre felt capacious and infinite. “I wrote myself in,” she told The New York Times in 2000.
Her ink was permanent. Weathering rejections, dead-end jobs and her own persistent doubts, Butler rose to international prominence. She became the first science fiction author to be granted a MacArthur fellowship, and the first Black woman to win Hugo and Nebula awards. Today her influence spans literature, genres and media. ....

Federal judge considers dispute between Landfield and Alaska governor over news conference access

Alaska District Court Judge Joshua Kindred will decide by next Friday whether or not Gov. Mike Dunleavy illegally excluded writer and website owner Jeff Landfield from news conferences.
Landfield, who runs the Alaska Landmine site, sued the governor in December, claiming that he was excluded because of the content of articles he had written. Landfield wants an injunction requiring the governor to admit him to news conferences.
“The list of reporters who may RSVP is limited to those associated with a traditional media outlet: broadcast radio stations, broadcast television stations, or subscription-based newspapers or other periodicals. No bloggers are approved to RSVP,” the state wrote in opposition to Landfield’s request for an injunction. ....
