Thousands of Christchurch households unable to get fast broadband

STUFF A group of Christchurch residents 350m beyond the edge of the city s fibre broadband network face a costly bill to get connected. About 8000 Christchurch properties have missed out on a city-wide fibre broadband roll-out. Many of these residents, who all live within the city boundary, have been told they will have to pay thousands of dollars to get access because Christchurch City Council-owned network provider Enable says it is not cost-effective to install fibre to their homes. A group of 36 homes at the top of Huntsbury hill have to pay $41,400 and residents at the top of Worsleys Rd in Cracroft have to pay $82,800 before Enable will install fibre broadband to 49 properties there.

The Cass Bay copper house near Lyttelton, designed by architect Michael O Sullivan, was a somewhat controversial build, due to its strong, sculptural form and copper cladding and roofing. But it received the highest praise possible by Grand Designs presenter Chris Moller who gave O’Sullivan the ultimate accolade, comparing him to legendary greats Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto.
