NEWLAND — It would be a gross understatement to say that the past 14 months have been a difficult period in communities worldwide. As society has had to face the realities of a global pandemic that has enveloped virtually aspect of day-to-day living since its onset in March 2020, every walk of life in its own way has embraced the college basketball tournament adage of “survive and advance,” with the goal of emerging on the other side of COVID-19 and returning to as close a semblance of normalcy as possible. ....

Mobile vaccination units rolling out to Riverside Elementary


AVERY COUNTY — The new Avery County mobile vaccination clinic will make its first stop out in the community this week by setting up at Riverside Elementary from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, for individuals 65 years of age and older to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Meanwhile, the community vaccination clinic at the Avery County Agricultural Extension will continue operations. As of press time, appointments are still currently available this week for those who are 65 and older to receive the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. To make an appointment, call (828) 733-8273. Appointments for the first dose are required. ....

NEWLAND, N.C. (WBTV) - - When Federal CARES Act COVID-19 relief money became available last summer, Avery County Manager Phillip Barrier says officials from several departments discussed the best use for it.
With vaccines on the horizon, the group felt the prudent thing was to acquire special trailers to use to take vaccines to the rural areas and could also be used for other health issues.
As a result, two 30 foot long camper-like trailers were bought and arrived this week. ....

'Game changing' hotel development inching toward fruition | News


SUGAR MOUNTAIN — A major hotel development planned to be built next to Lowes Foods in the Village of Sugar Mountain is gradually making progress toward becoming a reality.
Earlier this year, Village of Sugar Mountain Village Manager Sue Phillips and Village Attorney Four Eggers met with representatives of Commercial Realty Advisors, a Winston-Salem-based developer, to discuss the possibility of developing a four-story, 118-room Marriott hotel on a parcel of land that is currently owned by Norvell Properties.
“[We] had a preliminary meeting with them and went through what our ordinance requirements were, as far as what our height restrictions and architectural standards are,” Phillips said. “They’re projected that if they go through with it, it would generate approximately $17 million for our tax base.” ....
