Starlink begins offering satellite internet service in western NC


AVERY COUNTY — An innovative partnership between Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink and the state of North Carolina is bringing satellite internet service to two rural NC counties through a program that could likely have impacts in Avery, Ashe and Watauga counties in the not too distant future.
The program, known as the Satellite Internet Technologies for Student Connectivity Pilot, will provide students in the Swain County and Hyde County school systems access to Space Exploration Technologies Corporation’s, (SpaceX) Starlink internet service.
Funding for the program was made available through the CARES Act and implementation of the technology will be made possible through the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) and the Friday Institute at NC State University, among other state organizations. ....

50 years ago: The March 4, 1971, edition of
The AJT featured an article entitled “‘70 Census Shows Avery County Has Grown.” Avery County’s official population in the 1970 census was 12,655, up 5.4 percent from the 1960 figure of 12,009 the Bureau of the Census, US Department of Commerce, reports. The official population of the state was 5,082,059, up 11.5 percent from the 1970 population count, which was 4,556,155. The 1970 census counted 12,493 white persons in Avery County, 98.7 percent of the population total; with 150 blacks and 12 persons of other races. In 1960, 98.67 percent of the population was white. The Census showed 1,104 children under five years old, with 2,983 in ages 5 through 17, 7,301 people age 18 through 64; and 1,267 who were 65 and older. The population 14 years and older included 6,019 married people, 751 who were widowed, 194 divorced, and 2,533 never married. Avery County’s 1970 population was classified as 100 percent rural. ....

ACS teachers and staff receive Moderna vaccine


NEWLAND — The Avery County vaccination effort continues to sweep the state’s eligible populations, with those who are 65 and older, public school employees and now daycare workers currently eligible for the vaccine.
First doses of the Moderna vaccines are available for the aforementioned group at the Avery County Agricultural Extension at 661 Vale Road above Ingles in Newland on Friday, March 5. Those would like to receive the vaccine must make an appointment by calling the Avery County vaccine call center at (828) 733-8273. The call center is available daily from 9 to 11 a.m. Patients must bring their insurance card if they have one and wear appropriate clothing for ease of access to the upper arm. Health-e-Schools provides telehealth to ACS students


AVERY COUNTY — Before March 2020, words and concepts such as Zoom, distance education and telehealth were not as common in the English lexicon. However, over the past year, students in Avery County schools have certainly become familiar with this vernacular, especially with the latter, now that telehealth services are available for students across the school system.
The program, courtesy of the Center for Rural Health Innovation, partners with local schools in order to improve access to healthcare in rural communities through innovation. CRHI was formed in 2010 and began its Health-e-Schools telemedicine program with Mitchell County Schools before expanding to McDowell and Yancey counties, as well as Avery County last January. ....

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Several schools in the North Carolina mountain counties delayed class Monday due to hazardous weather conditions.
Caldwell County Schools issued a 2-hour delay as freezing rain was in the forecast. The district’s WrapAround Program, the before and after school program, will also operate on a 2-hour delay.
