When it Comes to the Rule of Law in India, We Need to Pay Attention to Variants of Concern
The cases of Stan Swamy, K.R. Krishnam Raju and the Narada Scam accused are terrible aberrations that the judiciary must not tolerate or else personal liberty will become an alien concept.

Three recent developments have been quite disturbing. In the context of these developments, we need to ask ourselves: Are we witnessing the rule of law doing a vanishing trick or are we witnessing variants of concern in the rule of law? Something is definitely amiss and itâs time we identify it and take remedial steps before it is too late.
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court has closed the matter related to “illegal detention” of labour activist Nodeep Kaur after her counsel told the court that she would avail “other remedy” with regard to “maltreatment and custodial torture.” A medical report submitted before the HC had confirmed injuries on the internal parts of her body.
“The allegations with regard to illegal detention are no longer required to be gone into in view of the fact that there is an FIR dated January 12 registered against the detenue (Nodeep Kaur) and she has been released on bail. The said issue, if need arises, can be raised before the appropriate forum,” the HC observed while closing the matter.
No mention of several other issues, including those in self-financing medical edu sector

KOCHI: The Opposition UDF which has been hunting down the ruling LDF with allegations ranging from ill-treatment of devotees during Sabarimala agitation to the continuing foul play in deep-sea fishing is silent on several other issues which could have given a shot in the arm this election season. The state police’s failure which had dominated news space on several occasions is not being highlighted by UDF leaders during their campaign and there is no mention of the self-financing medical education sector which is in disarray.

New Delhi: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Tuesday directed a district and sessions judge posted in Faridabad to conduct an enquiry into the allegations that labour rights activist Shiv Kumar was detained illegally and tortured in the custody of Haryana police.
Bar & Bench, Justice Avneesh Jhingan passed the orders after examining four medico-legal reports (MLRs) that were produced in court along with the status report dated February 27.
