Hamilton County Schools Announce New Principals

Hamilton County Schools announced several personnel updates Monday.
Andrea Johnson is the new principal at Barger Academy. She previously served as the principal at Lakeside Academy, a Level 5 school.
Ms. Johnson, a 26-year veteran of Hamilton County Schools, first joined the district as a teacher and taught for 13 years. In 2008, she moved to the district level as a secondary literacy coordinator, and later served as assistant principal at both Woodmore Elementary School and Lakeside Academy. Ms. Johnson has been the principal at Lakeside Academy since 2014, where she started a Destination Imagination class to engage students in STEM challenges, creativity, and collaboration. She is the recipient of an Annenberg Foundation Grant (2017), and made it to the Global Finals of the first Destination Imagination Competition (2015-2016). ....

Teacher At Hamilton County Schools Receives National Award For Excellence

Hamilton County Schools teacher Erika Martin was awarded the California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence by the National Education Association Foundation.
The California Casualty Awards for Teaching Excellence winners are selected based on their dedication to the profession, community engagement, professional development, attention to diversity and advocacy for fellow educators. Ms. Martin, an instructional coach at East Side Elementary, is one of only 46 public school educators in the country to receive the award.

Janice Smith Payne


Janice Smith Payne, 83, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2021 at Brookdale Senior Living Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. Ms. Payne was born on March 1, 1937 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Samuel V. and Virginia M. Smith. She was a 1955 graduate of Chattanooga High School, and she obtained her B.A. from the University of Chattanooga in 1959, where she was a member of the Pi Phi sorority. In 1982 she earned her Masters in Elementary Administration from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Ms. Payne spent 38 years working for the Hamilton County Department of Education. She began her teaching career at James A. Henry Elementary, then she served at Pineville Elementary and Big Ridge Elementary. In 1991, she spent a year traveling throughout Tennessee as an evaluator for the Career Ladder program. In 1992, she became the Assistant Principal at Calvin Donaldson Elementary, and in 1994 she became the Principal of East Lake Elementary, where she remained until her retirement ....
