Six years of planning and investment come to fruition this month with the opening of Warkworth Vets’ new 465 square metre veterinary hospital in Hudson Road. The state-of-the-art clinic is at least twice the size of the old Neville Street premises, with four consulting rooms, two theatres, four anaesthetic and prep areas, large recovery rooms, a digital imagery area, dental suite, laboratory, pharmacy and isolation room. There are also observation areas and viewing panels for better monitoring of recovering animals. Outside, there are pens for sheep, goats and alpacas, plus a fenced off dog walking area and a large car park. ....

The outbreak was reported in a seafood market, where wildlife trade occurs. One of the virus s potential intermediate hosts is the pangolin, which may have acquired the virus from bats. Apart from pangolins, camels, and civet cats, another possible host of the virus are minks. Researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report outbreaks of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on mink farms in Utah, United States. They surveyed around farms for evidence of exposure and found high SARS-CoV-2 titers, suggesting a possible viral transmission pathway to native wildlife. ....
VCI inspected 86 veterinary practices during 2020. /Donal O Leary In 2020, the Veterinary Council of Ireland (VCI), imposed a period of suspension from practise on practitioners for reasons including the prescribing of remedies to animals which were not under the care of the vet. Suspension sanctions were imposed on four vets in total, which were then confirmed by the High Court. VCI inspected 86 veterinary practices during 2020 in association with the VCI certificate of suitability, a certificate required to be held by each practice in Ireland. The National African Swine Fever Specialty Laboratory identified the country’s first ASF case in 2018 and was responsible for the latest study. The lab which is based within the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute identified new strains (genotype II) with low fatality rates in some provinces and regions. Hosting the event will be programme farmer James McCay. James runs an upland and hill farm at Drumquin, Co Tyrone. The farm averaged 300 breeding ewes in 2020, split evenly between upland and hill ground. Nutrition and scanning results Lambing is due to start at the end of March.
