June 01, 2021 By Published on May 12, 2021 The University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center and its Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have likely identified a novel rotavirus strain in very young foals that can’t be detected using current tests. The university in Lexington, Kentucky, continues to investigate an outbreak of diarrhea in foals after local equine practitioners reported an unusual increase in diarrhea cases in foals between 2 to 5 days old. Foals can commonly develop diarrhea a week to 10 days after birth, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Dr. Emma Adam, associate professor at UK and a research and industry liaison with the Gluck Center, said it became clear in mid-February that there was a pattern of cases that behaved like cases of infection with equine Rotavirus A, a common virus that causes foal diarrhea. However, the diagnostic tests were coming back negative. ....

The deadline to transmit fiscal bills to the second chamber is looming, so we saw a hustle to get all final fiscal bills introduced and processed this week. We continue to monitor the progress of House Bills 14 and House Bill 2, which include funding for major agricultural priorities including the Montana Agricultural Experiment Stations, a new Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and a new Wool Lab for the state. House Bill 14, which covers the long-ranch building bonding program needed for these major building projects, has now passed the House and will be heard in the Senate. ....
Kentucky Researchers Discover New Rotavirus That Has Been Sickening Foals Sponsored by: Researchers at the University of Kentucky s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have preliminarily identified a novel Rotavirus associated with diarrhea in very young foals. This virus could not be detected using current diagnostic tests for equine Rotavirus A and appears to be different than the virus strain used in the currently available commercial vaccine. Efforts are underway to better characterize the virus and determine its role in the current outbreak of diarrheal disease. Additional investigations are also underway at UK to identify other possible causes, and researchers are sending out an epidemiological survey to farms to better understand the outbreak. ....
