Star Spangled Salute: The Veteran Who Lived In The Stadium

Today’s Star Spangled Salute honors Vietnam Veteran and former Green Beret, Tom Garvey. Tom has been in the news recently because he revealed he was a homeless Veteran who lived in a secret 20 by 60 room behind a left field concessions stand in Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia before it was torn down. Tom worked for his Uncle who was contracted out to work concessions and the parking lot back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Since Tom was there all the time, nobody noticed that he had a small apartment in the stadium with a fridge, coffee pot and other simple comforts. He often would throw secret parties there too. Shortly after living in the stadium ended, Tom married and wrote a couple of books including “The Secret Apartment: Vet Stadium, a Surreal Memoir”. Thank you for a great story Tom ....

One man found the best way to avoid parking and traffic at sporting events by not leaving the stadium.
Veterans Stadium, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles for more than three decades, was also reportedly the residence of one man, Tom Garvey, who claims to have secretly lived there for years.
Garvey, a Vietnam veteran who worked for his uncles’ contracting business at the stadium, lived in a 60-foot by 30-foot room on the upper level in left field from 1979-1981. Garvey is sharing his memories of living in his “off-the-wall South Philly version of the Phantom of the Opera” in a new book: ....
