Epilepsy affects almost 2.2 million people in the United States. Many of those are children. Watching your child have a seizure is terrifying. However, there are ways to help manage epilepsy.
First, you need to know epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain that makes people more susceptible to having recurrent seizures. It is not the one-time type of seizure that occurs from a high fever. Epilepsy is recurring. It is also one of the most common disorders of the nervous system.
Epilepsy affects people of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds. Anything interrupting normal connections between nerve cells in the brain can cause a seizure. Some of those causes include a high fever, low or high blood sugar, alcohol or drug withdrawal, or a brain concussion. ....

UVA Develops Imaging Approach to Help Stop Epilepsy Seizures
An advanced imaging approach developed at the University of Virginia School of Medicine could let surgeons determine the best target in the brain to stop epilepsy seizures, new research suggests.
UVA’s approach could improve patient outcomes and open underused surgical options to patients who are now ineligible, the research team reports.
“This imaging approach is significant, as it creates 4-D brain maps that offer additional sensitivity over standard-of-care imaging by revealing rates of glucose uptake rather than final absolute glucose uptake,” said imaging expert Bijoy Kundu of UVA’s Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging and UVA’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. “This imaging approach might be beneficial, as it may offer non-invasive localization of potential epileptic foci.” ....

A former University lecturer is among those paid tribute to in this week s funeral and death notices.
Between March 27 to April 1 dozens of touching messages have been left in the funeral notices section of PlymouthLive s sister title, The Herald for those who have died.
In the latest notices, there were 20 death notices for 18 people who had passed away in recent weeks. Some loved ones have left more than one posting for the same person, so different family members can pay their respects. ....
