Special Olympics torch runners enjoy clear day

Fresh air, clear skies and a lit torch rallied about 75 people to the starting line Saturday morning for a 3-mile run in support of the islandâs Special Olympians.
Led by a torch-bearer Kaleb Parker, 15, runners started at Kodiak High School and set off on the run along Rezanof Drive, over the Fred Zharoff Memorial Bridge to Near Island and Trident Basin, and back again.
As runners continued the course to Near Island, the torch was passed to members of law enforcement.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run and Pledge Drive for Special Olympics serves a dual purpose: to show support by Kodiakâs law enforcement for the Special Olympics program and to help raise money for it. ....

Mount Tabor s football team capped off an undefeated regular season with a 36-13 win at home over Southwest Guilford on Thursday to clinch the Piedmont Triad Conference championship.
The Spartans (7-0, 5-0) turned in another solid defensive performance, holding the Cowboys (4-3, 3-2) to -7 yards rushing on 18 attempts for the game. Senior defenders Josiah Banks, Max U Ren and Justen Stafford Jr. all came up with interceptions.
Leading the way for Tabor s ground-and-pound offense was senior running back B.J. McIntyre, who carried the ball 21 times for a game-high 165 yards (7.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. ....

Georgia Southern Alternative Breaks Program celebrating 15 years of issue-focused service

Since 2006, students at Georgia Southern University have been going on weeklong, immersive, issue-focused service experiences known as alternative breaks. Throughout the Alternative Breaks Program’s 15 years, participants like student Caleb Parker have helped communities overcome challenges while bettering themselves in the process.

Parker has taken part in two Alternative Break trips during his time at Georgia Southern, focusing on urban farming in Asheville, North Carolina, and Lynchburg, Virginia. He said working in greenhouses and orchards allowed him to connect with fellow students while helping other people.

Candidates for Associated Student Government executive positions took questions from students Friday night in the third and final debate of the 2021 election, prompting conversations about inclusivity, student safety and accountability of campus leaders.
The presidential, vice-presidential, treasurer and secretary candidates on the Vision and Make it Matter tickets shared the stage in a town-hall-style forum moderated by Honors College Dean Lynda Coon. To accommodate COVID-19 restrictions, the event was live-streamed to a virtual crowd, and students were asked to submit questions through Instagram and Twitter.
Much of the discussion was geared toward improving the presence of ASG agents on campus, particularly within student-led organizations, and creating a more accessible student government.
