Sixteen young people across the country have been recognized on a national level by the Department of Youth Affairs (DYA) for outstanding work in their respective disciplines.

Though the Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly had a dampening impact on the education sector, persons looking to acquire tertiary education should not feel discouraged.
That is the word from Guild President-Elect at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus, Shakita Christopher.

Christopher was victorious in the recently held Guild elections and will be leading an all-female council when her tenure begins on June 1.
Speaking to Observer on the impact of the pandemic, Christopher said the many changes made – including the shift to online learning – will improve access to a wider cross-section of people. ....

What students are saying about remote learning – the finale to an Observer 3-part series
Their friends, teachers, sports, extracurricular activities, “the loud and crazy lunchroom” and sharing their snacks, are some things children say they miss most since they are not physically at school.
However, some of them at the primary and secondary levels have discovered that they are now getting to enjoy working at their own pace, on strict schedules, of course, and be free from “the stressful environment of school”.
Others, though, recounted the challenges of remote learning, from struggling to directly interact with teachers in a timely manner, getting easily distracted, a hectic schedule, to not having reliable internet access and not knowing when completed assignments will be graded. ....

Despite the various impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, Guild President at the UWI Five Islands Campus Caleb Gardiner doesn’t believe pursuing higher education will or should be placed on the proverbial back burner.
The economic fallout, along with logistical concerns from persons who must travel to go to university, are some of the issues that will likely threaten recruitment.
However, Gardiner said with different ways to maneuver these challenges, persons should still strive to take that step.
“I don’t think it will hinder pursuing a higher degree. As our Vice-Chancellor said, now is the time for you to capitalise on higher education and he also said we are facing a challenge that will prepare us for life. It’s all about adopting and it’s all about capitalising on the moment. So I would encourage people to come and to pursue a higher education. ....
