Learn from the tragedies
On May 4, 1970, Ohio National Guard soldiers fired 67 shots into a crowd of student anti-war protesters at Kent State University, killing four and wounding 13 others, with one left paralyzed as a result of his injuries. Students had been protesting President Richard Nixon’s announcement that the U.S. had secretly been bombing neutral Laos and Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

There’s a ribbon-cutting and grand opening celebration today at Chris’s Coffee and Custard in Roanoke. The cafe was created to employ and train people with special abilities, where everyone feels comfortable and part of the community. The business was bound by mother and son team Beth and Chris Woodrum.
The Board of Zoning Appeals will discuss allowing cell towers on a building at Valley View. US Cellular is proposing to put six antennas and equipment cabinets on the roof of the building where Michael’s is located. The application says four of the antennas will be visible from Valley View Boulevard with the others facing the parking lot.

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – Botetourt County’s brand-new Colonial Elementary School is filled with top-notch technology; however, just over a week ago, stepping into the school was like stepping back in time as the school was off the grid for a month.
During construction, the incumbent internet provider couldn’t provide connectivity to the school in time for the its opening on January 25.
“It’s been difficult to go that long without the internet,” said Principal Tammy Riggs.
She worked with county leaders, Blue Ridge Towers and BriscNet to come up with a fix and found a temporary solution, a portable tower.

But a school resource officer was able to help lift the kid’s spirits.
Thursday morning, Principal Tammy Riggs said the kindergartener got dropped off at Colonial Elementary School, but he immediately got upset.
“We had a student come in who was reluctant to go to class, had been out for a while and was very emotional and had just laid down on the floor,” said Riggs. ”He just didn’t want to go.”
