President Joe Biden wasted no time in starting to tackle some of the country’s most pressing climate change issues after being inaugurated on Jan. 20. One of Biden’s first acts as president was to rejoin the U.S. to the Paris Agreement, a 2015 non-binding pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions necessary to keep the planet’s warming to below 2 degrees Celsius.
Nearly every country in the world has made the pledge to act on climate change, but Former President Donald Trump announced plans to remove the U.S. from the accord in 2017. Commentary: Sen. Mimi Stewart and Rep. Nathan Small filed the New Mexico Clean Fuel Standard Act (Senate Bill 11), a Governor’s priority bill that would bring an estimated $47 million in economic investments annually to the state while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. The transportation sector is the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in New Mexico behind the oil and natural gas industry.
If enacted, the Clean Fuel Standard Act will establish a market-based approach to cut greenhouse gas emissions from transportation fuels, requiring fuel producers and importers to reduce the amount of carbon in fuels used in New Mexico a 10% reduction by 2030 and a 20% reduction by 2040. Fuel producers and importers can meet a lower carbon fuel standard by purchasing credits if they are not able to produce f ....

When California passed its landmark cap-and-trade law in 2006, supporters were hopeful that the program would provide the template for other states and eventually the federal government to solve the climate crisis.
Now, many environmental groups are increasingly saying the program has done little to curb climate change. Worse, they say, it is harming the lower-income areas and communities of color most affected by pollution.
Those environmental justice concerns stopped President-elect Joe Biden from picking Mary Nichols, who leads the California Air Resources Board the agency that oversees the program to head the Environmental Protection Agency. And other states, from Pennsylvania to Washington, are now rethinking how they might create similar programs. ....
