Roundwood on cutting edge

FARMERS, government representatives and industry leaders converged at Tantanoola’s Roundwood Solutions to view to a world-first timber post treatment facility which converts residue into biochar.
More than 40 people attended the company’s biochar and timber post plant tour to hear the new treatment option for posts which solves common disposal issues and brings a slew of environmental benefits.
Roundwood Solutions managing director Steve Telford said the company’s creosote-based wood preservative – Tanapost – was a carbon-neutral fencing product which is both environmentally friendly and approved by the Environmental Protection Authority.
Mr Telford said Tanapost was the only timber fencing product that has been treated all the way through the entire product, ensuring more durable product with a longer life and increased safety benefits for users. ....

When Anji Seth was in graduate school, she never thought of herself as a big data scientist.
She just went to her engineering and atmospheric science classes, did the computer programming that was required, and learned as she went.
“All of my classes required some kind of programming – it was a natural thing,” she notes. “But we didn’t train specifically on it – we just did it. Climate science is one of the original ‘big data’ problems, but we didn’t always call it that.” ....

KZN Premier calls for concerted effort to address climate change

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Mr Sihle Zikalala has warned that if not addressed, the climate emergency may devastate economies in the same way Covid-19 has. The Premier said addressing challenges related to climate change requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders. “The climate emergency demands that in all that we do, we must produce, trade, and conduct business and our lives in a manner that protects and nourishes the environment. Our generation has the historic task of building climate resilient communities, reducing the carbon footprint, deploying environmentally friendly green technologies, and ensuring a just transition to a low carbon and sustainable development trajectory. Part of the just transition means that the support of new, green industries must be accompanied by the development of new skills and the reskilling of the work force so that people can fully benefit from the new industries and businesses,” the Premier said. ....

Join ACT Climate Change Council

Applications are now open for new members to join the ACT Climate Change Council.
Minister for Emissions Reduction Shane Rattenbury is encouraging experts in the fields of zero emissions transport and public health to apply to join the ACT Climate Change Council (the Council).
The Council advises the ACT Government on the ambitious program to make the ACT resilient to the effects of climate change and to reduce our emissions to net zero by 2045.
“The ACT Government is a world leader when it comes to taking climate action and the advice we receive from the ACT Climate Change Council helps us build resilience and find the best path towards net zero emissions,” Minister Rattenbury said. ....
