Senators sponsor state bill to ban Native American mascots

Area state senators are sponsors of a bill that would prohibit public schools from using Native American mascots, logos and team names.
State Sen. Jo Comerford, D-Northampton, filed Bill SD.417 a few days ago to take up the mantle in the fight against imagery and mascots deemed insensitive to Indigenous communities. Comerford is the lead sponsor and Adam Hinds, a Pittsfield Democrat, has signed on, as have Democratic colleagues Sonia Chang-Diaz, Jack Patrick Lewis, Rebecca Rausch, Sal DiDomenico and Jason Lewis. The bill has previously been unsuccessful in legislative session. ....

Cities and towns throughout Massachusetts were left unrecognizable in March 1888, buried underneath a blanket of white, blasted by wind-whipped snowdrifts of roughly 20 feet and battered severely by what has gone down in the books as one of the largest winter storms to hit the Northeast.
In the wake of the Great Blizzard of 1888, the title the storm rightfully earned, hundreds were left dead across the region. In Massachusetts, residents in the Berkshires had to dig out of as much as 40 inches of snow while dealing with bone-chilling temperatures. ....

For the first time since before the holidays, there are no Franklin County or North Quabbin towns in the state’s “red” or highest-risk COVID-19 category this week, though five are in the “yellow” or higher-risk category.
Orange was the only town left in the “red” last week, but it moved into the yellow with 22 positive COVID-19 cases reported over the past two weeks, according to the most updated figures released Thursday by the state Department of Public Health. The state categorizes cities and towns based on population and the number of cases. ....
