Grinnell College’s softball team is in danger of losing a critical number of players after the athletic department fired Assistant Coach Ben Suchon this past summer. Neither Suchon nor the players have received a consistent explanation as to why.
The situation has prompted multiple first- and second-year players, who were recruited by Suchon, to consider transferring, leaving the team with a severely depleted roster.
“If Coach Suchon goes, we have to be asking ourselves if the softball program is in jeopardy,” said Bruce Vermeulen, father of Elizabeth and Kathryn Vermeulen, both class of 2024 and softball team members.

Rebecca ‘Becky’ Lum, 90, passed away peacefully on Nov. 23, 2020, in Vacaville, California. Becky was born Oct. 19, 1930, to Harry and Lillie Lum in San Francisco, California, where she lived from childhood through college.
She attended Francisco Junior High School and Polytechnic High School. Becky was naturally athletic and enjoyed badminton, ping-pong and tennis, even earning medals in city championships when competing on a Chinese girls’ basketball team.
Becky majored in science at the City College of San Francisco and later San Francisco State College. After her graduation, she was hired to teach both algebra and physical education at Carlmont High School in Belmont and was later offered a position to teach math at Armijo High School in 1958, where she spent 33 years teaching analytical geometry, trigonometry and calculus as well as coaching tennis, basketball and badminton.

Congrats! You failed. That is trophy culture in a nutshell. Trophy culture encapsulates participation trophies and awards given to people for doing the bare minimum. Recompensing mediocrity, encouraging the sole pursuit of easily attainable goals and wiring children to believe that most failures in the real world are met with rewards.
While trophy culture encourages a positive mindset and motivational atmosphere, we must consider the long-term effects.
Receiving a participation trophy only sparks a secondlong feeling of happiness, inducing immediate gratification. However, research has shown that delayed gratification is more beneficial in several different ways.
According to Psychology Today, delaying gratification promotes good habits, a proclivity for patience and self-control. This is especially crucial today, as the pandemic is forcing us to test the limits of these qualities. In order to see positive, long-term results, we need to stay inside and avoid seeing o
