UPDATE 1-Colombia defense minister dies from viral pneumonia linked to COVID-19 -government

BOGOTA, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Colombia’s Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo has died from viral pneumonia related to COVID-19, the government said on Tuesday.
Trujillo was reported infected with coronavirus earlier this month and was transferred to an intensive care unit. He died in the military hospital in Bogota aged 69.
“The death of Carlos Holmes fills me with pain,” a visibly moved President Ivan Duque said. “Colombia has lost one of its best men.”
Before serving as defense minister, from where he coordinated military and police operations in the fight against drug trafficking, illegal armed groups, illicit mining and other criminal acts, Trujillo served as foreign minister in Duque’s government. ....

Colombia to Issue Temporary Protected Status to 1 Million Venezuelans

The government of Colombia announced Monday that it would offer temporary protected status for ten years to Venezuelan refugees who entered the country illegally, essentially offering a pathway to legal residency for nearly a million people.
Colombian officials estimate that 1.7 million of the about 6 million Venezuelans who fled the socialist dictatorship are in Colombia, most of them illegally. Venezuela and Colombia share a long, often poorly secured border, and the regime of dictator Nicolás Maduro has deliberately complicated the process for Venezuelans to obtain passports and other legal documents necessary to leave the country, exacerbating the worst migrant crisis in the history of the Americas. ....
