Squabbles and accusations: Inside Brazil's COVID Senate inquiry | Coronavirus pandemic News

Sao Paulo, Brazil – In the latest session of Brazil’s COVID-19 Senate inquiry, set up to investigate the government’s handling of the pandemic, former Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello mistook one senator’s surname for a military rank.
“I am not a military man; Coronel is a surname,” Senator Angelo Coronel – whose last name means “colonel” in Brazilian Portuguese – told the former minister.
The gaffe drew chuckles from senators, spectators and even Pazuello, an army general, whose 10-month stint as health minister ended in March and saw the bulk of Brazil’s nearly 450,000 coronavirus-related deaths.
But it was a brief respite in a commission so far marked by rowdy squabbles between pro-government and opposition senators, by witnesses accused of lying in their testimony, and by increasingly shocking revelations and accusations. ....

(Bloomberg) Brazil’s senate has opened a wide-ranging probe into the federal government’s erratic response to the coronavirus pandemic, as opponents of President Jair Bolsonaro try to seize on a key source of vulnerability ahead of his 2022 re-election bid.
The 11-member parliamentary inquiry committee started working on Tuesday by electing centrist Senator Omar Aziz as its president, who then appointed Renan Calheiros as its rapporteur. Calheiros, a powerful political enemy of Bolsonaro, has been warming ties with former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, now a likely contender in next year’s election. ....

(Bloomberg) Brazil’s senate is opening a wide-ranging probe into the federal government’s erratic response to the pandemic, as opponents of President Jair Bolsonaro try to seize on a key source of vulnerability ahead of his 2022 re-election bid.
The 11-member parliamentary inquiry committee is scheduled to begin works on Tuesday with the election of its president and rapporteur, two politicians who are likely to have great influence in the future of the investigations.
While senators are also expected to investigate alleged misuse of federal Covid funds by states and municipalities, it’s Bolsonaro who stands to lose the most. The probe is the latest and possibly the most politically damaging push yet to hold the far-right president accountable for one of the world ....

Brazil Supreme Court allows probe of Bolsonaro's coronavirus response

Brazil s Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed a Senate investigation of President Jair Bolsonaro s handling of the pandemic to go forward, one of two cases it tackled that could affect the leader s bid for reelection next year.
The full court also was weighing the political future of former President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, a potential powerful rival to Bolsonaro.
One of the judges earlier ruled he had been unjustly convicted in a corruption case, a decision that effectively reinstated his right to run for the presidency again.
The court voted 10-1 Wednesday to uphold Justice Lus Roberto Barroso s order that the Senate should start an investigation of into Bolsonaro s management of the crisis because a required number of senators had sponsored such a call. ....
