SARA RUBERG/THE STATESMAN The eighth-seeded Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team was firing on all cylinders at home on Friday, as the Seawolves defeated the visiting Towson Tigers by a final score of 14-8 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves now advance to the second round to face Rutgers, who defeated Drexel later in the day at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Graduate attacker Taryn Ohlmiller led the Seawolves with seven points (four goals and three assists), and tied for the second-most points in an NCAA Tournament game by a Stony Brook athlete alongside Dorrien Van Dyke and sister Kylie Ohlmiller. ....
Thursday May 13th, 2021 10:00am (Photo Courtesy: Dave Anderson) We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness. Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. Fri May 7 2021 | Brian Logue | College PHOTO BY KEVIN P. TUCKER Drexel came from behind to beat Towson 15-14 in overtime and is headed to the CAA final for the first time in program history. Drexel’s magical season continues on following a 15-14 comeback victory in overtime against Towson in the Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse semifinals on Friday evening in Harrisonburg, Va. Senior attacker Courtney Dietzel scored off a free-position attempt in the opening possession of overtime to give the Dragons (13-1) the victory. Drexel, which beat Towson by double digits twice in the last month, trailed by three goals with under 10 minutes to play. But then Drexel ripped off three goals in a span of just 60 seconds Colleen Grady (7:46), Jamie Schneidereith (7:06) and Karson Harris (6:46) to tie the game 14-14. ....
Friday April 23rd, 2021 1:30pm (Photo Courtesy: Glen Mitchell, StanfordPhoto.com) No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Northwestern have played a cut above the rest of the field this year. The rest of Division I lacrosse is up for grabs, with multiple teams in the sport’s traditional powerhouse conferences, the ACC and Big Ten, jockeying for positioning in the standings. Last week, Boston College topped a Notre Dame team that took UNC to the brink. The Eagles will close the season at Syracuse in what could be the matchup of the weekend. In the Big Ten, Rutgers upset Maryland, and Johns Hopkins topped Penn State. ....
