COLUMBUS, Ohio This weekend is the deadline for President Biden s goal of having 70% of eligible Americans vaccinated.
Franklin County as a whole will not reach this goal, but some parts of the county will.
“Those that wanted it, they rushed out and got it. Now we re at the point where we re having to do a little more differentiation and education for folks who are still uncertain about whether they want to get the vaccine,” said Carla Williams-Scott, Director for the Department of Neighborhoods. ....

Columbus mayor unveils slate of youth summer programs to reduce violence

Pools closed. Youth programs were canceled. Seasonal employment was hard to find.
Amid a rampaging coronavirus pandemic last year, youngsters across Columbus likely found themselves without much to occupy their time when school let out for summer.
Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said Thursday he s determined to prevent that from happening for a second year in a row. Speaking at a news conference outside the Driving Park Community Recreation Center, Ginther unveiled a slate of youth summer programming in the city made possible by public/private partnerships.
Referring to “unprecedented investments we are making into our city’s young people,” Ginther said his hope is for the programming to help the city’s youth “build back some of what they’ve lost during this pandemic in a very challenging year.” ....

YWCA of Columbus honors 7 in latest Women of Achievement class

Saturday mornings were not always relaxed in Mary Howard’s youth.
“My mother would take us to nursing homes to visit residents, so we didn’t always stay in jammies and watch cartoons,” said Howard, the executive director of Ohio State University East Hospital. “It didn’t take long for me to see how those visits impacted their lives, and that really cultivated in me a passion for caregiving.”
Howard is one of seven women being honored this year as YWCA Women of Achievement. In its 36th year, the award is given to women not only for their work, but also exemplifying YWCA Columbus’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. ....
