While their names won t be read at the National Police Officers Memorial Service until its Oct. 16 rescheduled date, they will be honored virtually during National Police Week from May 9-16 this year. The coronavirus has been cited for one police officer line of duty death in Maryland in 2021, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Nationally, 63 of the 119 police line of duty deaths in 2021 as of May 4, just under 53 percent, have been due to the virus. ....

It s a day which honors police officers, firefighters, and other emergency personnel who died in the line of duty. The annual event is the only statewide ceremony in the nation that brings together all segments of the public safety community. The Fallen Heroes Day ceremony is usually open to the public. Because of the pandemic, only family members of those killed in the line of duty will be allowed to attend in person this year. ....

Vigil remembers fallen Greenbelt officer struck by car By Natalie Rubino GREENBELT, Md. - People in Greenbelt are mourning the loss of fallen officer Corporal Christine Peters. Peters died Thursday after she was hit by a car on January 2nd while responding to a crash in the woods near Edmonston Rd. and Cherrywood Ln. Officials in Greenbelt held a procession for Peters on Saturday as her body traveled from the medical examiner’s office to a funeral home. Flags in Greenbelt flew at half-staff.
