Akwesasne Healing Centre still waiting on Care Centre to close permits

The Standard-Freeholder reported earlier this month the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) had invested more than $90,000 in order to create the Akwesasne Healing Centre, a homeless shelter and healing centre located at the Care Centre. Despite being nearly ready to welcome its first visitors, the 11,000-square-foot shelter had to remain locked due to not receiving the proper permits from the City of Cornwall.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall and Area Housing Corporation are assisting roughly 1,500 individuals or families who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of homelessness with another 582 households on their wait list to receive rent geared to income housing.
Meena Mullur, the City of Cornwall’s Housing Program Supervisor, acknowledged that the issue of homelessness in the region may have gotten worse during the pandemic.
“Our most recent data on homelessness is from 2018 which may not be reflective of the current homelessness issues and factors in our area,” said Mullur in an email to ....

Akwesasne set to open healing and homeless shelter in Cornwall

Located within the walls of the Cornwall Care Centre formerly the Cornwall General Hospital the centre will be able to host a handful of homeless people within its 11 rooms. Inside, volunteers and workers alike are hard at work transforming about 11,000 square feet of the building into a welcoming area.
