Students capture Ithaca civil leaders' oral histories in new book

Ithaca’s community organizers, activists, Black farmers and more have transformed the community in ways big and small. And they have stories to tell.
A new book, “13 Leaders: Stories of Community Building for Systemic Change,” published by Cornell students, honors the journeys and life’s work of 13 Cornell Civic Leader Fellows – grassroots leaders who have played critical roles in developing resilient communities in and around Ithaca.

Jeanne Moseley, senior lecturer in the division of nutritional sciences and the director of the Global Health Program, and Anthony Ong, professor of human development, have been named 2021 Kaplan Family Distinguished Faculty Fellows in Service Learning.
The Kaplan Family Distinguished Faculty Fellowship recognizes faculty members who have had a significant impact on undergraduate, professional or graduate education at Cornell by involving their students in service-learning programs. Kaplan faculty fellows receive $5,000 to further develop a community-based learning or research project, to initiate a new effort, or to make service-learning courses a regular part of the curriculum. ....

This spring, Cornell University, along with over 235 campuses in 37 states and the District of Columbia, received designation as a Voter Friendly Campus. The initiative, led by national nonpartisan organizations Fair Elections Center’s Campus Vote Project (CVP) and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, held participating institutions accountable for planning and implementing practices that encourage their students to register and vote in 2020 elections and in the coming years.
The mission of the Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster efforts that help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process. Cornell’s campus was evaluated based on a campus plan about how Cornell Votes would register, educate, and turnout student voters in 2020, how we facilitated voter engagement efforts on our campus, and a final analysis of our efforts- all in the face of ....

Students win State Department Pickering Fellowships

Two undergraduates in the College of Arts & Sciences and a recent graduate of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have been named Pickering Fellows by the U.S. Department of State. These are Cornell’s first Pickering Fellows since 2011.
The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program, managed by Howard University, supports students who are interested in working in the U.S. Foreign Service. The program provides funding for a two-year graduate education, provides two summer internships, offers mentoring from a Foreign Service officer and provides other professional development activities. After completion of their master’s degrees, fellows are placed in Washington, D.C. or at a U.S. embassy, consulate or diplomatic mission around the globe and agree to serve at least five years in the Foreign Service. ....
