Palm Coast mayoral candidates debate planned for July 6.

The News-Journal is pleased to announce that it will host and moderate a debate between all six candidates for Palm Coast mayor on Tuesday, July 6.
Cornelia Manfre, Alan Lowe, Doug Courtney, Carol Bacha, Kathy Austrino and David Alfin are vying to be the next mayor of the city which was incorporated in 1999.
A special mayoral election for the position will be held July 27. The election was called after the sudden resignation of former Mayor Milissa Holland in May.
News-Journal Editor Pat Rice will moderate the debate.
Palm Coast is growing rapidly and has tremendous potential, but the city also is facing a variety of challenges, Rice said. City Hall has gone through significant management turnover during the past two years, including the most recent resignation of former City Manager Matt Morton.  ....

Kevin Cichowski’s brief candidacy for the special July 27 election for Palm Coast mayor ended today as oddly as it began a week or so ago–with cryptic statements, a back-handed endorsement of candidate Alan Lowe, and the proposal for an “active shooter system” in the schools.
Dropping out two days after qualifying ended also created a problem for Supervisor of Elections Kaiti Lenhart, whom Cichowski had not informed. Lenhart’s office had on Tuesday sent the ballots for the special election to be printed, to its printer in Orlando. What was already estimated to be an election that could cost up to $188,000 might have cost quite a bit more had Cichowski dropped out a day or two later. ....

Candidates Piling Up to Run for Palm Coast Mayor

It’s a free-for-all: The qualifying window for the special election for Palm Coast mayor doesn’t close until next Monday. But eight candidates–from the obscure to the esoteric to the expected–have already filed to run. Six candidates are Republicans, two are Democrats. It’s a non-partisan election, but only ostensibly so. Three of the candidates are Realtors.
There is no limit on the number of candidates who may run, as long as they qualify either by petition or by paying the $1,140 fee. The petition window closed last week. Not a single candidate had qualified that way, which required getting nearly 500 petition cards signed. The qualifying window closes at noon on June 7. Conceivably, some of those who have filed to run may yet disqualify themselves by then, though most have already paid the fee and the rest are scheduled to meet with city officials t ....
